This original pencil study on paper, dated 20.3.1912, of Labour leader Ramsey MacDonald was for a Punch cartoon entitled "Out in the cold". Bernard Partridge was born in London, his father was President of the Royal College of Surgeons. He first made a career as an actor in Sir Henry Irving's company. He joined Punch in 1891.This brilliant artist's first cartoon appeared in 1899 and the last in 1945. He was Knighted in 1925.
